Jonathan studied a Law Degree and completed his Law Society Finals at Northumbria University. He has based his career in Teesside, first training and qualifying as a Solicitor in 1994 at Askews Solicitors, before moving to Watson Woodhouse Solicitors in 1997. At that time, his work focused on Family Law and Personal Injury cases.

Jonathan joined Freers Solicitors in 2004 to head the Family Law Department, becoming a Partner at the firm in 2005. In 2016, he then became a Director at Freers Askew Bunting, continuing his role head of the Family Law Department.

After joining the firm, Jonathan became accredited by The Law Society to its Family Law Panel and then Advanced Family Law Panel, as well as its Children Panel. He represents a range of clients from parents to grandparents and other family members to children who have been removed from their parents by Local Authorities. He conducts cases from child contact and residence disputes, domestic abuse injunctions, divorce and civil partnership dissolution and financial settlements to care and adoption cases. Jonathan acts at all levels of courts from the local Magistrates and County Courts, to the High Court and Court of Appeal in London.

Jonathan was appointed the President of the Tees Valley Law Society for 2012 to 2013 and the constituency council member for Middlesbrough. As a proud advocate of Legal Aid, he has been involved in national campaigns to protect and support the vulnerable in our society.
